CONSUMER SOCIETY IN EUROPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Annotation.<\/em><\/strong><em> The article is devoted to the study of the formation of the European consumer society, its historical, social and cultural prerequisites. The key concepts of consumption are considered from the point of view of K. Marx, E. Durkheim, M.Weber and J. Baudrillard, which emphasizes both the utilitarian and symbolic function of consumption. The evolution of consumer practices from the Middle Ages to the 20th century is traced, including the consumer revolution, industrialization and urbanization. Special attention is paid to the influence of climatic, demographic, economic and cultural factors on the formation of mass consumption, social status and identity of an individual. It is shown that the modern consumer society combines economic, symbolic and cultural dimensions, and consumption acts not only as a means of meeting needs, but also as a tool of self-expression and
